What is Autoimmune Disease?

Autoimmune diseases arise from an abnormal immune response of the body towards tissues normally present in the body (autoimmunity). This may be restricted to certain organs like the thyroid (i.e. thyroiditis) or a particular tissue in different locations in the body (e.g. Goodpasture's disease), which may affect the basement membrane in both the lungs and the entire body, (e.g. systemic lupus).

The treatment of autoimmune diseases have traditionally been managed using immunosuppression, including administering a variety of medications that decrease the immune response.

In contrast, our treatment is very different.
